Frequently Asked Questions
What if I can’t afford counseling right now?
At Kapwa we understand that in today’s healthcare environment many self-paying and uninsured clients may struggle to afford mental health services. Whether facing financial hardship, lacking insurance, or dealing with high-deductible health plans we offer a Sliding Scale Program in an effort to provide affordable care to the whole community.
We reserve limited space for clients who wish to use our Sliding Scale Program.
How do you help individuals in the adoption kinship network?
Jackie believes healing begins from within. She uses the Seven Core Issues of Adoption created by Sharon Kaplan Roszia, Deborah Silverstein, and Allison Davis Maxon, as a framework to assist with the therapeutic navigation during sessions. The Seven Core Issues includes all forms of permanency and accounts the influence of attachment disruptions and trauma experienced by members of the adoptees’ family and beyond. It is with Jackie’s interdisciplinary approach and other treatment modalities that further aids as tools and strategies to provide client specific support.
Jackie’s knowledge from completing the Training for Adoption Competency with C.A.S.E., her personal adoption journey, passion, and 15+ years of experience in the mental health field allows her to assist others. She provides a safe space to support a therapeutic healing journey while respecting each story with integrity.
Should I do telehealth counseling?
Telehealth can be provided exclusively or in conjunction with in-person sessions. While psychotherapeutic treatment can be effective in treating a range of mental disorders, and personal and relational issues, there is no guarantee that telehealth or in-person treatment will be more effective than the other. Telehealth treatment is different from in-person therapy. In the event Jackie believes you would be better served by another form of psychotherapeutics after telehealth services has been established you are allowed to change to in-person sessions or be referred to another counselor in your geographic area upon request.

What does “Kapwa” mean?
Virgilio Enriquez, the founder of Flipino psychology, identified kapwa as the core concept of Filipino psychology. Kapwa is a deeply relational and holistic way of understanding the self, where the boundaries between self and other are not rigid but interconnected. It reflects a shared identity, mutual respect, and a recognition of the inherent dignity in others.
Kapwa is the shared inner self or the self in the other. Our well-being is inherently tied to the well-being of others, making relationships central to personal growth and healing. In counseling, embracing kapwa allows for a more integrative and culturally responsive approach, where the client and counselor engage in a mutually respectful and empathetic relationship. The therapeutic journey, in this sense, becomes a shared process of healing that acknowledges personal struggles within a larger social and cultural context.
By grounding counseling in kapwa, the healing experience moves beyond just self-exploration. It becomes a process of reconnection—with oneself, with others, and with the cultural values that shape identity. This shared journey can be deeply transformative, fostering a sense of belonging, acceptance, and emotional growth.
